Travel Adventure - Mount leuser national park is one
of the grandest forest areas I south east asia, and also one of the largest,
coverinf nearly 9,900 square kilometers (3,670 square miles). Horseshoe shaped
and ecompasses awide range of habitats from coastal forest along small strect
of the west coast to the tall, non volcanic peaks of the northern central
range, including Mount leuser itself, at 3,381 metres (11,092 feet) the second
tallest mountain in Sumatra. The park is bisected by the beautiful alas river,
down which tourists can paddle and float on white water rafts. In the far east,
only two hours from Indonesia’s third largest city, medan, is Bahorok
Rehabilitation station where confiscated orphaned orangutans are taken to be
rehabilitated into the wild. This is adjacent to the village of bukit lawang
and is reached easly by car or bus. The park has about 105 species of mammals
and as well a rehabilitant orangutans the visitors should se at least some of
the other primates such as white handed
gibbons, Thomas leaf monkey, simang, pigtailed macaques. If time is taken to
walk in the park one might be luky to see tracks of Tiger, Elephant and
Sumatran Rhinoceros, or the scratch marks made on tall trees by the sun bear.
The bird fauna here is rich (313 species recorded) and beautiful with the
drumming note of the greater cloucal and the ‘ki-au’ call of the long tailed
arguspheasant being among the most characteristic sound. More or less in the
middle of the park is the ketambe research station which has been a centre of
wildlife research for twenty years.
